John Stofan is an exercise scientist with interests in sports nutrition, hydration, and the effects of fluid and electrolyte balance on cardiovascular and thermoregulatory response to exercise in the heat. For the past 10 years, Mr. Stofan conducted lab-based physiology and field-based applied research in the areas of hydration, rehydration, sweating response, electrolytes, and fluid balance. He currently leads the research technology and operations team supporting the sports science laboratories for Gatorade Research and Development, an integral part of Pepsico Functional Beverages, North America. A native of Connecticut, Mr. Stofan earned his BS and MS degrees in Human Performance/Exercise Science at Southern Connecticut State University. He served as Research Fellow coordinating internal and external research in the Human Performance Laboratory at Southern, followed by providing research support for the cardiovascular and fluid physiology group at the John B. Pierce Laboratory, Yale University. Mr. Stofan has been a member of the American College of Sports Medicine since 1989. He is also an author and co-author of several publications in scientific journals and a contributor to the text Sports Drinks: Basic Science and Practical Aspects. He participates in cycling, mountain biking, backpacking, and sea-kayaking and has interests in environmental medicine and photography.
