Objectives:
  • Be able to define sickle cell trait and describe how it can result in injury and even death in athletes.
  • Be able to define rhabdomyolysis and describe how it can lead to serious injury and death.
  • Be able to describe the type of exercise usually associated with death in those with sickle cell trait and explain this association.
  • Be able to describe three differences between the symptoms of sickling and heat cramps.
  • Be able to describe practical ways of preventing and treating sickling in athletes.
