Objectives:
  • Be able to describe the approximate durations and intensities of exercise typically involved in a competitive soccer match.
  • Be able to explain why creatine supplementation is unlikely to play an important role in soccer performance.
  • Be able to describe the changes in stores of muscle glycogen likely to occur during a soccer match.
  • Be able to describe the effects of dietary carbohydrate on glycogen stores and performance in soccer players.
  • Be able to provide a scientific rationale for stressing the need for fluid replenishment to soccer players.
  • Be able to compare the benefits of water versus sports drinks as beverages for soccer players.
