Objectives:
  • Be able to describe the relative efficacy of low-carbohydrate vs. low-fat diets for producing weight loss in obese individuals over periods of about 3 months and 12 months.
  • Be able to describe how low-carbohydrate diets affect risk factors for heart disease.
  • Be able to explain why a low-carbohydrate diet is not advisable on a daily basis for endurance athletes.
  • Be able to explain the physiological benefits of a high-carbohydrate diet in athletes undergoing intense endurance training.
  • Be able to describe the concept of periodization in athletes' diets.
  • Be able to provide practical recommendations for carbohydrate consumption by athletes.
